For my first trip to Knysna – a small town on the West Coast of South Africa, I chose the absolute best accommodation in the area… Cliffhanger Cottages! For my international readers, Knysna is located within the beautiful Garden Route, just one of the many astonishing landscapes you will find in South Africa. Although this amazing place is just outside of Knysna, the setting could not be more perfect. Surrounded by the lush greenery of the Tsitsikamma forest, these cottages are literally perched on the edge of a cliff, with views over the tree tops and surrounding hills. The views are stunning and the atmosphere is cozy and comfortable, especially when the mist rolls in over the tree tops…

I am an Earth sign and completely in my element when surrounded by lush forests, wilderness and the relaxing sounds of nature. This is exactly what you will find at Cliffhanger Cottages, two days of this and my sense of balance and peace was restored. You will find this awesome self-catering accommodation on a quiet country road leading towards the forests. We decide to take the scenic route from Knysna by turning up onto Phantom Pass – a haunted gravel road that winds up the mountain. All of this adds to the enticing atmosphere of the area and gave us the urge to explore more!

You will find three cottages on this property, one, Hedge Cottage has a garden view and the other two, Cliffhanger and Cliffedge are placed on the edge of a cliff that overlooks the forest and the view goes on for miles. We were lucky enough to have booked the titular Cliffhanger Cottage and just loved it. Each room had large windows on the cliff edge side allowing for spectacular views regardless of where you were – living room, bedroom and even the bathroom shower. We visited in autumn and truly appreciated the large indoor fireplace as it can get quite cold after dark – it added to the cozy effect of the surroundings. The cottages had everything that we needed to make our own meals or braai. My favorite part of the cottage was the balcony that had a giant couch with comfortable pillows and a beautiful view and we breakfasted on this couch each morning, savoring the peace and quiet. However, it was hard to choose what part I enjoyed most as each room had its own specific attraction, I could have stayed there much longer than two days.

Although we stayed here quite a while ago, it made such a positive impact that I just had to share… We will be returning to Cliffhanger Cottages very soon!

  1. that place looks amazing though I may lose my mind in all that quiet. So I would have to use that as a base. I think I find my balance definitely being out in that environment but not just sitting around. I need to be interactive. This is perhaps because I am a sensory learner and to be able to touch, see, smell, and just experience all that beauty would elate me to no end!

    1. Thanks Eric! It works wonderfully well as a comfortable base to explore the area! I completely understand the need to be interactive and truly immerse yourself in your surroundings! We spent most of each day exploring the forests – there is so much to do in this area. I hope you are adding South Africa to your bucket list? 🙂
