Best Time to Visit Mauritius with Family

If you’re planning a family holiday in Mauritius, it’s important to choose the best time to visit.

The island has a tropical climate, with warm temperatures and high humidity throughout the year. However, there are certain periods that are more favorable for families.

The best time to visit Mauritius with your family is during the months of May to December.

This is the dry season with lower humidity and cooler temperatures, making it easier for families with small children to explore the island. During this period, the sea is calmer, creating ideal conditions for water activities like snorkeling and swimming.

It’s important to note that the peak tourist season in Mauritius is from December to April, which coincides with the island’s summer season. While this period offers beautiful weather, families should be prepared for higher prices, larger crowds, and more limited availability for accommodations and activities.

If you are looking to save some money during your family holiday in Mauritius, consider visiting during the shoulder season of May to September, when the temperature is cooler and prices are more reasonable.

Overall, the best time to plan a family holiday in Mauritius is during the dry season, from May to December, when families can enjoy a range of outdoor activities with more comfortable temperatures and fewer crowds.

Safety Considerations for Families in Mauritius

Is Mauritius good for families? Well, that depends on how safe it is, right?

As parents, we know that keeping our children safe is our top priority, especially when traveling to a new destination. So, let’s address some of the safety concerns you might have before planning a family vacation in Mauritius.

First of all, you might be wondering: Is Mauritius safe?

The answer is yes!

Mauritius is considered a safe and peaceful destination. The crime rate is relatively low, and the locals are friendly and welcoming.

If you’re traveling with toddlers or babies, you might be concerned about the healthcare facilities. Rest assured that Mauritius has well-equipped hospitals and clinics, and the medical staff are trained to deal with emergencies.

We all got sick during our Mauritius trip with a terrible throat infection. Of course, this hit our son worse than us and he was very ill during one day of the trip. The resort sent over their medical team to give him some medicine. When that didn’t help, they called in a pediatrician who drove from the other side of the island at night to tend to him and another sick child. The pediatrician was excellent and he treated our son really well.

However, keep in mind that this can be a costly expense (even though it’s 100% worth it!). So, make sure that you have reliable travel insurance when traveling to Mauritius with your family! We recommend SafetyWing.

As with any destination, it’s always a good idea to take some precautions. Here are some tips to keep your family safe during your Mauritius holiday:

  • Be aware of your surroundings and avoid walking alone in secluded areas at night.
  • Keep your valuables in a safe place and avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
  • Wear sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses to protect your family from the sun’s harmful rays.
  • Always supervise your children, especially near water activities or at the beach.
  • If you’re renting a car, make sure you’re comfortable driving on the left side of the road.
  • Purchase travel insurance to cover any health, medical, or other expenses that may come up during your trip.

By following these simple safety tips, you can enjoy a worry-free family vacation in Mauritius.

Here are some practical tips to ensure a smooth and enjoyable vacation for everyone:

  • Bring sunscreen: The tropical sun in Mauritius can be harsh, so be sure to pack plenty of high-SPF sunscreen to protect you and your little ones. Don’t forget to reapply frequently, especially after swimming.

Alternatively, taxis or private transfers can be arranged through your hotel or tour operator.
  • Pack appropriately: In addition to sunscreen, consider bringing insect repellent, comfortable walking shoes, and lightweight clothing. If you’re traveling with a baby or toddler, bring any necessary gear such as a stroller, car seat, or portable crib.
  • Take advantage of kids’ clubs: Many family-oriented resorts and hotels offer supervised kids’ clubs with age-appropriate activities and games. This can give parents some much-needed rest and relaxation time while the kids have fun and make new friends.
  • Prepare for the unexpected: Traveling with kids can be unpredictable, so be prepared for unexpected delays, tantrums, or illnesses. Pack a small first-aid kit with basic medical supplies, and have a plan in place for emergencies.
