Go for a Stroll Inside a Cotton Castle
Pamukkale, which literally translates to “cotton castle” in Turkish, is one of Turkey’s most photographed destinations.
This natural wonder, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988, is located in the country’s southwest, in the Denizli Province. Every year, millions of travelers go to see the stunning white slope, whose terraces mimic a frozen cascade. Many of these terraces have accumulated water over time, resulting in natural thermal pools of vivid sky-blue color. As a consequence, the scenery is stunningly beautiful and memorable!
If you grow weary of walking about this wonderful site, don’t go too far since the ruins of the Hierapolis Ancient City await you at the top of the hill. Hierapolis’s well-preserved Roman theatre, among other things, is located here. You may also take a refreshing swim at Cleopatra’s pool, where you can swim (literally) among ancient ruins.
Timanfaya National Park Takes You to the Moon
At present, space travel is out of reach for most people… but only time will tell.
Meanwhile, whether you fantasize about visiting the moon or outer space, making your desires come true (or almost so) is easier than you think. Simply book a trip to Lanzarote!
Yes, you read that correctly. The powerful volcanic eruptions that struck this Canary Island between 1730 and 1736 created what is now known as Timanfaya National Park, one of the most remarkable areas in the entire archipelago. The Fire Mountains region, with its spectacular rock formations and reddish and orange tones of the terrain, appears to be something out of a science fiction film.
If you’re looking for more “extraterrestrial” experiences, stop by El Golfo’s Charco Verde to observe the beautiful color of its water up close, or explore the wine area of La Geria, whose scenery will leave you speechless.
Visit the Palace of Knossos and Get Lost in the Minotaur’s Labyrinth
If you enjoy Greek mythology, the Minotaur’s Labyrinth was most likely already on your travel wish list.
Just a few kilometers from Heraklion, you may explore the core of one of Europe’s oldest settlements: the Palace of Knossos, the hub of the Minoan civilization. Archaeologist Arthur Evans found its ruins at the beginning of the twentieth century and thought it was the Minotaur’s labyrinth due to its immense size and numerous palace’s complicated chambers.
During your tour, you may learn more about the story and the enormous beast with the body of a man and the head of a bull that was imprisoned in the labyrinth by King Mino’s order; and discover how Theseus, son of the king of Athens, defeated the Minotaur and found his way out of the labyrinth.
Aside from the intriguing Minotaur tale, the Knossos Palace is a must-see for anybody interested in learning more about the Minoan civilization. The Throne Room and the royal family bedrooms, as well as the outstanding ornamental murals, are among the most noteworthy spaces.
Discover the Dark Mysteries of a Deserted Greek Island
Few things pique our interest more than abandoned sites, right?
As a result, we’ve included one on our travel wish list: Spinalonga, a small deserted island off the coast of Crete, has a long and terrible history. The massive castle that can still be seen today was built by the Venetians, who inhabited the island until 1715 when it was taken over by the Ottomans. In addition to being the site of fights and strife, Spinalonga is remembered for housing a leper colony from 1903 until 1957. Walking through its streets, you can observe the ancient settlement’s abandoned houses, the old hospital, the church, and the cemetery.
If you want to learn more about the island before visiting, we recommend Victoria Hislop’s novel The Island, which is set in Spinalonga.
Visit One of the World’s New Seven Wonders
In addition to being included on the UNESCO World Heritage list, Chichén Itzá was named one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World in 2007.
The stunning archaeological site on the Yucatan Peninsula is quite likely the most well-known Mayan city in the world. The Temple of Kukulkan is without a doubt the jewel of this location. Did you know that thousands of people come here every spring equinox to witness the strange phenomenon of light and shadow known as the “Descent of Kukulcan” or “Descent of the Feathered Serpent”? The Temple of the Skulls and the Temple of the Warriors are two more must-sees during your tour.
If swimming in a cenote is also on your travel wish list, you’re in luck because many excursions include the two experiences on the same day.
Return to the Ancient Roman City Where Time Stood Still in 79 A.D
In 79 A.D., the massive eruption of Vesuvius buried the prosperous port city of Pompeii, which was located near Naples, under a massive covering of volcanic waste.
Walking through the ash-preserved streets now is like traveling back in time, as the intact archaeological site takes you to another age. The site is vast, with numerous attractions such as the Forum, the Pompeii Amphitheatre, theaters, basilicas, and even a brothel. One of the most notable features is the frescoes and mosaics that decorate the most opulent homes, the beauty of which may still be enjoyed today. The plaster casts of the residents who were caught off guard by the eruption, on the other hand, provide insight into the catastrophe that transpired here.
If you’re a history lover, this is a must-visit site to add to your travel wish list.
Change the Luminous Lagoon’s Water to Phosphorescent Blue
What if we told you there’s a spot where the water mysteriously lights up when you touch it? No, it’s not a joke… we’re talking about Jamaica’s Luminous Lagoon!
The lagoon lies near the city of Falmouth, where the Martha Brae River meets the Caribbean Sea. It is one of the few spots on the planet where you may observe the phenomena of bioluminescence up close and personal. The lagoon’s microscopic inhabitants create a bright blue light as they move, providing an amazing display.
This magical light show is truly mesmerizing which is why it deserves a spot on anyone’s travel wish list.
Change Continents in a Flash
Istanbul is one of only a few cities in the world that can claim to be on two continents.
The Bosphorus Strait separates the European and Asian parts of the city and going from one side to the other by bus, vehicle, or ferry is a must-do experience for your travel wish list. A boat cruise on the Bosphorus provides a unique view of Istanbul’s ancient landmarks and distinctive cityscape.
Although many of the city’s most prominent sights, such as the Grand Bazaar, Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, and the Rüstem Paşa Mosque, are on the European side, make time to explore the city’s other side. Kadikoy, the “coolest” residential district at the moment, is a must-see on the Asian side.
Discover Your Own Little Paradise on a Caribbean Island
This beautiful 40-kilometer-long and 2-kilometer-wide stretch of paradise is located in the Caribbean Sea, north of the Yucatan Peninsula. Of course, we’re talking about Holbox!
To reach here, use a ferry or boat from the Chiquilá port. The trip takes around 30 minutes and is quite an adventure. Once on the island, you should be aware that automobiles are not permitted, thus golf carts or bicycles are the most common modes of transportation for exploring the island.
You won’t find enormous hotels, paved roads, or the hustle and bustle of a bustling metropolis here…. It’s a place to unwind, disengage from the outside world, get lost, and rediscover yourself. Punta Mosquito, Punta Coco, and Passion Island are the ideal sites to do so.
Curate Your Travel Wish List
